AFRICA'S HUMANITARIAN CRISES

According to the United Nations in 2025 around 150 million people will need humanitarian assistane in Africa. Many of the problems that Africa currently faces are underreported and are strongly related to overpopulation and fast growing population sizes. Adding this overpopluation to already war, famine and other vulnerable situations. This cartogram explores this as part of infogr8's FutureFriday workshop.

DATA
As part of a workshop organised by infogr8 we were provided with United Nations population data and were asked to identify a story. Since the fertility rates are very high in Africa while at the same time getting lower in the rest of the world I focused on Africa's growing population and found a strong correlation with conflict areas and humanitarian crises.

DESIGN SYSTEM
Using Datawrappers cartogrtam map I could show where populations in Africa were largest (as shown by a larger rectangle). As a second data level I added the colours to each rectangle showing where fertility rate was high or low (dark to light). Additionally I provided all the areas where there are humanitarian crises such as extreme weather or diseases and armed conflicts.
