THE LAST UNDISPUTED
The heavyweight boxing era of the 90's was one of the most interesting times for (boxing) sports fans. With 5 different undisputed champions and many more contenders it is difficult to understand what happenend when. This map visualizes, clarifies and shows additional information when opened in the interactive version here.

In professional boxing in the 90's there were 3 main boxing organisations; WBA, WBC and IBF. Whoever is the champion of all three boxing organisations at once was considered the UNDISPUTED champion.

Up until 1993 there were three boxers who were undisputed champions of the organisations, but after that there was not one main champion for a while until Lennox Lewis in 2000 won all the three organisations (belts) again.

The fourth column in this overview is the Lineal championship. It is a separate championship and only looks at "the man who beat the man" without looking at the particular organisation under which a fight takes place.

DATA
The project started as a personal interest of mine. I remember when I was younger and I was starting boxing as a hobby, the nineties boxing scene was a great inspiration. Especially since the reigning heavyweight champion Mike Tyson was getting back in the boxing scene and was generally still considered as the best boxer of that time.

When I found a dataset with all champions, belts and dates (from #Sportsvizsunday) I had to make this interactive visualization. I ended up adding a lot of information from Wikipedia to give the data the much needed context. The visualization is made in Tableau and shows additional information in the interactive version.
DESIGN SYSTEM
Since there was so much information available and I wanted to tell something about the fights, the fighters and particular events, I needed to show the information in different levels. All this information can be viewed by hovering over the circles, coloured blocks and arrows, while at the same time not overwhelming the audience with all this information.
